Harnessing Rights Initiative (HRI) is a human rights legal and policy consultancy registered in the Republic of South Africa. Using a feminist, intersectional approach, we support efforts to promote human rights at the local, regional and international levels through research, policy development, legal advocacy and strategic communications.
Our work spans a range of issues, all linked through a core commitment to protecting the rights of marginalized people, and utilizing legal instruments and institutions designed to ensure accountability. HRI works in close collaboration with advocacy leaders and other relevant stakeholders to identify and advance substantive goals – whether in the halls of the United Nations, ministries of justice or health, regional bodies like the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, or with local NGO leaders.
We deploy a variety of tools in our work, including collaborative agenda development, in-depth research to support legal and policy strategy, formal publications, technical expert support to NGOs, advisory bodies and working groups, and media engagement, including radio, television, print and social media.
Wendy Isaack, founding partner at HRI, is a senior expert in gender justice and international human rights law with more than 18 years professional experience in policy and advocacy in South Africa, several African countries, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and United Nations systems and processes.
Wendy has pursued her career in multiple contexts, including national human rights organisations in South Africa, and over a decade in New York City in international organisations, including at United Nations Headquarters. She offers a keen sense of global and Africa regional dynamics, the civil society landscape, and an expertise in international human rights and humanitarian law.
Significantly, over the years she has gained excellent knowledge of UN systems and processes pertaining to human rights treaty bodies and special procedures and the women, peace and security agenda. Her work has focused on developing and implementing multi-pronged advocacy strategies in domestic, regional, and international fora, program management in the substantive area of gender justice, including research and advocacy on sexual orientation and gender identity issues and women’s human rights in conflict and post-conflict contexts.
